The Martian

Review

The Martian is a 2015 American science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. The film is based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel The Martian, which Drew Goddard adapted into a screenplay. Damon stars as an astronaut who is mistakenly presumed dead and left behind on Mars. The film depicts his struggle to survive and others' efforts to rescue him. The film's ensemble cast also features Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Producer Simon Kinberg began developing the film after 20th Century Fox optioned the novel in March 2013. Goddard adapted the novel into a screenplay and was initially attached to direct, but the film did not move forward. Scott replaced Goddard, and with Damon in place as the main character, production was approved. Filming began in November 2014 and lasted approximately 70 days. Some 20 sets were built on a sound stage in Budapest, Hungary, one of the largest in the world. Wadi Rum in Jordan was also used as a practical backdrop for filming.

The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2015. 20th Century Fox released the film in theaters in the United States on October 2, 2015. The film was released in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX. The film received positive reviews and has grossed over $629 million worldwide, becoming Scott's highest-grossing film to date, as well as the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2015. It received several accolades, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Goddard. For his performance, Damon received several awards nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Actor, the BAFTA for Best Actor, the Critic's Choice Award for Best Actor, and he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

1.The first we all will notice while watching this movie is that 'The Mars' landscape is beautifully rendered in very credible way with dust clouds and all and this is the main attraction of the movie. People with a obsession for realistic science fiction movies will surely enjoy this one.

2.But people might it abit unsatisfying because there not much of a thrill in this movie like there was in Alfonso Cuaron’s "Gravity". In Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, space looked very spooky, exciting and deadly at the same time. And come on, this is Mars we are talking about which is about 225 million km away from Earth.

3.And another thing people will have fun watching is Matt Doman. He has a lot of things in a lot of movies, but it’s not often that he’s been funny. The biggest surprise in Ridley Scott’s latest film, The Martian , is that Damon is very funny, in a movie that you wouldn’t have expected to have any laughs. So if you’ve been put off by the posters advertising the movie that show a flat close-up of Damon’s face in an astronaut’s helmet, the good news is that he is far more animated than he’s been in almost any other film. It’s not that Damon isn’t a good actor, but he’s often been cast in parts, such as in the Bourne films, where he has to play an emotionless tough guy or a put-upon everyman ( Contagion and many others).

4.Besides being alone on a planet, the main character never displays any signs of loneliness, despair or fear. He is more like "oh, looks like I'm stuck on Mars, let's grow potatoes". It was like Damon's character in this film is the complete opposite to what his character was like in Interstellar.

5.But despite being a fantastic movie some people who have watched it say this movie is beautiful, but hollow shell due to the fact that people say it lacked emotions, the human touch.

6.We were glad that the actually Martians(you know what we mean) didnot appear and decided to research on Mark Watney and eventually capture Earth due to it's rich environment(would have been crazy).

7.To sum it up, "The Martian" is a hell of a joyride. Kudos to Scott, his FX team and the gifted cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, shooting in Jordan to rep Mars. Nice touch, too, having the diversion-starved Watney forced to rely on a collection of disco hits left behind by his commander. Some things really are unforgivable. Going nearly two years without company (think Castaway, or a longer Gravity) with only the occasional "fuck you(excuse us for this langusge but we thought it was necessary), Mars" to show frustration, Watney comes close to coming apart. Luckily, Damon — a fine actor with the magnetism you only find in a true movie star — keeps you glued to the film. You're with him all the way. Everything was set up beautifully and everyone did a great job in making it a huge success. If you still haven't watched this movie, you should watch it. It will surely not disappoint you.
